Il est de ces lieux empreint de multiculturalisme. La Transylvanie, nourrie à travers les âges par les influences des migrants de toute l’Europe et du Proche-Orient, qui ont façonnèrent ainsi une culture vieille de plusieurs siècles, en fait partie. Le rôle de l’Allemagne, qui apporte sa grande tradition luthérienne en des lieux où cohabitent déjà Eglise orthodoxe roumaine, catholicisme hongroise et foi juive, est prépondérant. Natif de la ville de Brasov à la fin des années 20, Wilhelm Georg Berger s’inspire de ces influences allemandes et autrichiennes qui marquent durablement son éducation musicale. D’abord attiré par le violon puis par l’alto, il devient ensuite altiste à l'Orchestre philharmonique de Bucarest, où il se forge rapidement une solide réputation en tant qu'interprète et compositeur. Il compose ce magnifique concerto pour alto en 1959 : une œuvre lyrique éloignée des tendances lourdes de l'époque, sans la moindre trace de l'expressionnisme d’un Hindemith, sans inserts virtuoses, qui s’ancre singulièrement dans la littérature alto. L’interprétation enthousiaste de Nils Moenkemeyer, instrumentiste multi-récompensé, soutien à merveille ce joyau oublié.

There are regions in which a multicultural worldview is inevitable. Transylvania (Siebenbuergen) in today’s Rumania is one such region. Its special status attracted immigrants from many regions of Europe and the Near East, thus creating a centuries-old culture involving many ethnic groups. Germans known as the »Siebenbuerger Sachsen« had an enduring influence in Transylvania and added the Lutheran Church to the coexistence already formed by the Rumanian Orthodox Church, Hungarian Catholicism, and the Jewish faith. Here a Catholic church musician could compose Lutheran church music or play gypsy melodies on the organ. It was in this cultural climate that Wilhelm Georg Berger was born in Brasov (Kronstadt) in 1929. His musical education was modeled on Germany and Austria; he learned to play the violin and later the viola and ended up becoming a violist in the Philharmonic in Bucharest, where he quickly made a name for himself as an interpreter and composer. Berger composed his Viola Concerto in 1959: a lyrical work entirely removed from the trends of the time, without the slightest trace of Hindemith’s expressionism, without virtuoso inserts, standing singularly and uniquely in the viola literature.
