Whettam Fauré Hovhaness Piazzolla Concertos Pour Harmonica Et Orchestre Littera Di Mauro

Instrument de second ordre, penseront peut-être certains de l’harmonica, habitués à des musiques populaires, « country » ou réservées à des orchestres de danse. Il est ici utilisé pour de la musique classique, et, mieux, au service d’œuvres composées (à l’exception de la Pavane de Fauré) à son intention ; la parenté du timbre avec l’instrument majeur du tango, le bandonéon justifie – selon Gianluca Littera – l’arrangement qu’il a composé sur l’Oblivion de Piazzolla alors qu’il a entrepris de révéler avant tout la musique destinée primitivement à son instrument qu’il sert avec une virtuosité sans faille qu’accompagne le soutien de l’orchestre Stesichoros dirigé par Francesco di Mauro. Les attaches avec les sources « folkloriques » de ces musiques restent aisément perceptibles, origines juives de Graham Wettham (1927-2007), gréco-arméniennes d’Alan Hohvaness (1911-2000), moraves de Vilém Tausky´ (1910-2004) retentissent dans leurs œuvres, tout comme le tango dans celle de Piazzola. Reste le cas de la Pavane de Ravel auquel l’harmonica est probablement tout à fait étranger et dont Littera nous donne un arrangement brillant : faut-il avouer que ce morceau nous a semblé le meilleur du recueil. From the liner notes by Gianluca Littera: “When Stradivarius proposed that I myself present the discographic project that they had finished recording I immediately accepted with great enthusiasm. I must say that this task for me is easy in some ways, since a CD for harmonica and orchestra has the advantage of being something extremely rare. In addition, the repertory here proposed enables me to illustrate the possibilities of the instrument in sound, in a broad and varied way. In fact, this recording includes three original compositions written for Harmonica and Orchestra and two transcriptions that I myself have arranged. These transcriptions, although they were not originally for the Harmonica, further contribute to emphasising the timbric characteristics of this instrument. When one listens to Oblivion by Piazzolla one can clearly hear the timbric similarity to the bandoneón, the instrument that Piazzolla composed and performed on. In fact the two instruments belong to the same family, that of the free reeds. Another of my arrangements is the Pavane by Fauré. I consider that the melancholy sound of the Harmonica in this piece fully brings out the sad lyricism of Fauré’s famous melody [...]”.
