 Quatre quatuors à cordes présentant deux points commun : leurs auteurs n’ont laissé qu’une seule pièce pour quatuor à cordes, et ces pièces n’ont jamais été enregistrées auparavant. En ouverture, un mouvement de quatuor par Richard Wagner — ou plutôt sa reconstruction, car la partition était restée à l’état inachevé. De la même époque, un quatuor de Wladyslaw Tarnowski (1836-1878), habilement écrit dans le style néoclassique, laisse la part belle aux registres extrêmes. Chantant, parfois malicieux et gentiment audacieux, il se conclut par un Scherzo dansant extrêmement plaisant, dont le second thème fait chanter le violoncelle, et justifie à lui seul l’écoute de ce disque. Zygmunt Stojowski (1870-1878) a écrit ses Variations et Fugue après ses études au Conservatioire de Paris. C’est une oeuvre de jeunesse qui porte déjà les aspirations de son auteur, tourné vers une musique plus moderne que Tarnowski. Ce long mouvement au thème lyrique se transforme peu à peu au gré des caprices de son auteur. Des sept quatuors écrits par Eugeniusz Morawski (1876-1948), un seul a survécu, et seulement sous forme de manuscrit. C’est une oeuvre dense, d’inspiration picturale, d’une grande maîtrise et pleine d’émotions. Le quatuor s’ouvre sur un Nocturne d’une intériorité captivante, centré sur le chant profond du violoncelle. Suit un lever de soleil bucolique aux rythmes capricieux ; une émouvante prière impressioniste conclut l’oeuvre. (Walter Appel) Here we have an album featuring composers who wrote only one piece for a strings quartet. I have had the scores of these works in my collection for many years. It was at the beginning of this century, completely by accident, that I found out that amongst Richard Wagner’s creative output, an unfinished piece for a string quartet existed. I could not find the manuscript, but very quickly I found out that the reconstruction of this piece was done by Gerald Abraham. Immediately my desire was to bring this quartet back to life. When in 2014, the members of the Four Strings Quartet, with whom I’ve already worked with for several years, asked me if I had the score of the string quartet by Eugeniusz Morawski. They had been asked by NOSPR to perform it during a concert, and I instantly made it available for them. At the same time, I suggested that since they will be learning this piece for a concert, it might also be a good opportunity to record it. Which is what we did soon after. At that time I had developed the shape of the current recording, and had given the artists the remaining pieces: the one previously mentioned by Wagner, the Variations and Fugue by Zygmunt Stojowski and the String Quartet by Wladyslaw Tarnowski.
