In 2017, the world turns its fickle attention once more to Telemann, who died on 26 June 1767. There will be celebrations of perhaps the most prolific yet consistently inspired composer in the Western canon of art music. There is some competition for that accolade, most compellingly from Bach, but even the Kapellmeister of Leipzig could not match his elder compatriot’s industry, or indeed variety of work in every current genre of music, including the nascent art of opera. Fifty years ago, to mark the bicentenary of his death, a set which made a signal contribution to the appreciation of Telemann by an audience beyond scholars was the complete Tafelmusik, which received its first complete recording on period instruments from the Dutch recorder virtuoso Frans Brüggen and his Concerto Amsterdam. This set on Das alte Werk/Telefunken became an instant classic, and over the years has sold many thousands of copies, perhaps far more than could ever have been anticipated for what was then a 6-LP set of overtures, concertos and orchestral suites. A few years ago Brüggen’s compatriots in Musica Amphion turned their attention to Tafelmusik, and the set is now repackaged in a special anniversary edition. The instrumentalists – one per part, as they were on the earlier recording – are no less renowned in their own era as were Bruggen’s musicians. Many of them pursue distinguished solo careers – including flautist Wilbert Hazelzet, violinist Rémy Baudet, cellists Richte van der Meer and Jaap ter Linden, and the oboists Frank de Bruine and Alfredo Bernardini. All have made significant contributions to the dissemination and understanding of Baroque and early music through performances and recordings with the most distinguished early-music ensembles and conductors.
