Œuvre plutôt complexe et équilibrée, le Manoir Hanté s’apparente finalement plus au genre buffa, compte tenu de son thème, que par exemple Halka. Alors que la version du Teatr Wielki fait figure de référence, par sa gestion cohérente des contrastes, cette nouvelle version n’arrive pas toujours à atténuer certains aspects grandiloquents qui pourront surprendre l’auditeur non averti comme le chœur initial des soldats ou l’air d’Hanna (acte IV). Excès de ferveur patriotique pour ce qui est considéré comme le chef-d’œuvre de Moniuszko ? Livrets et musique abondent en effet en références nationales, jusqu’à la mazurka finale. La réussite que constitue la scène des figures de cire, la veille du Nouvel an, témoigne de ce qu’un peu plus de finesse, de légèreté permettent de mieux faire savourer la complexité d’une partition loin de se limiter à l’air de Stefan (carillon, acte III), partition fière de son caractère national mais ne dédaignant pas certaines influences italiennes ou réminiscences de l’opéra russe. It is rare to find a situation where one of the most exquisite national operas, according to many, has been recorded only a few times. Although The Haunted Manor by Stanislaw Moniuszko has been considered to be an outstanding showcase of Polishness transferred to the opera for more than 150 years, the modest number of comprehensive recordings of this composition may give rise to profound disbelief. This recording was created thanks to the determination of the artists of the Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk, who wished to honour the Patron of the university on the occasion of its 70th anniversary in a special and permanent way. This album is a documentary of a concert performance of The Haunted Manor, prepared with the participation of the most eminent pedagogues of the Academy. An interesting recording was made, faithful to the spirit of the Opera and, like it, full of noble humour, which is the setting of extremely serious content.
