S’attaquer à l’Himalaya des "Winterreise" nécessite un solide savoir-faire et une prétention à la rénovation tant la discographie est abondante et les références établies. Deux spécialistes du genre relèvent le défi. Roger Vignoles, ex-disciple de Gerald Moore, est un accompagnateur recherché (il fut celui d’Elisabeth Söderström). Florian Boesch s’est fait spécialiste des Lieder de Schubert et fut listé en 2015 comme finaliste des Grammy Awards pour sa "Belle Meunière" avant d’entrer sur les plus grandes scènes d’opéra dans les rôles mozartiens ou celui de "Wozzeck". Cette paire émérite nous donne une version très intimiste, à l’opposé du sommet habité et indétrônable Goerne/Eschenbach, assez éloignée de l’approche narrative d’un Fischer-Dieskau avec Moore ou Baremboim. S’appuyant sur un piano délicat mis de façon surprenante souvent en avant, le baryton autrichien joue de multiples nuances entre le quasi-murmure de "Gute Nacht", le chant triomphant du "Lindenbaum" ou l’effroi intériorisé du "Wegweiser". Une approche très personnelle, assez enthousiasmante, donnant la priorité à une douceur inhabituelle dans un cycle aux textes plutôt désespérés et qui saura convaincre par son esthétique particulière et sa qualité intrinsèque. Lieder have always constituted an important mainstay of the Hyperion catalogue. But there must always be room for more, especially in performances of the quality of Schubert Winterreise: a new recording from the established partnership of Florian Boesch and Roger Vignoles, who face down the inner torments of this darkest of song cycles. And finally, for those seeking something a little less Austro-Germanic, the Violin Concerto and Dance Suite by Erik Chisholm see the music of 'MacBartók' making a welcome reappearance on the label. The influences in this eclectic and rewarding programme range from Indian ragas to riotous Highland reels, and Matthew Trusler (making his Hyperion debut) and Danny Driver prove ideal soloists. The challenging accompaniments are in the safe hands of Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
