 Avant tout connu pour sa promotion de la musique et des musiciens polonais, le label Actes Préalable propose ici un enregistrement sur le thème de la passacaille. S'il s'agit au départ d'un court interlude entre une danse et une chanson, cette forme est fixée par Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643). La passacaille devient alors une série de variations basées sur une figure de basse, et souvent de caractère sérieux. Moins en vogue au XIXe siècle, cette forme connaît un regain d'intérêt au siècle suivant. Suivant un plan chronologique, cet album présente une série de passacailles pour alto seul ou accompagné d'un violon ou d'un piano. Après un passage par l'âge d'or de la passacaille, avec une œuvre de Biber (1644-1704), l'album se poursuit avec des œuvres de Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935), Paul Hindemith (1895-1963), Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) ou encore Alfred Pochon (1878-1959). Quant à Gordon Jacob (1895-1984), il est représenté par une œuvre de plus grande envergure : un Prélude, Passacaglia et Fugue. Enfin, le voyage musical s'achève par deux œuvres récentes, composées pour l'occasion par Pawel Michalowski (1990-) et Samuel Bisson (1984-). (Charles Romano) The name “passacaglia” comes from the Spanish words pasar (to move) and calle (street). Initially it was a short interlude between dances and songs, and the first score examples come from the beginning of the XVIIth century from Italy, when the composer G. Frescobaldi stabilized the passacaglia’s form in to a series of variations based on a figure bass. This form was adopted up until the XIXth century, and the word itself became synonymus of a theme with variations, usually with a serious character. Amongst the many composers creating this type of piece were Bach, Pachelbel, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Reger. Examples can be found in chamber, solo, symphonic and opera music, and its second bloom comes in the XXth century. On this album we will present some fascinating examples of its occurrence in the viola literature from its creation through to modern times; it will be a sort of cross-section through the ages and, a first of its kind, as a compilation.
