Relativement restreint en regard de la musique de chambre et des symphonies, le catalogue des œuvres pour piano de Weinberg comprend tout de même 7 sonates, une sonatine, une partita, trois livres de « Carnets de notes pour enfants » , un cycle de « 21 pièces faciles » , deux fugues dédiées à la pianiste Ludmila Berlinskaïa, une berceuse et deux mazurkas, les toutes premières compositions d'un jeune homme de 14 ans. La clarté discursive et l'équilibre sonore favorisés par une écriture essentiellement contrapuntique rendent sa musique accessible, mais l'on mène ici en ligne droite et rapide l'idéologie stalinienne se heurter à ses limites pour mieux la laisser sur place au profit d'une belle authenticité dans l'expression. Cette situation rappelle naturellement celle de Chostakovitch qui protégea son ami et « fils spirituel » des attaques du MGB (futur KGB) en février 1953. Sans rien qui pèse ou qui pose, l'interprétation d'Elisaveta Blumina, de nouveau très investie dans la redécouverte de Weinberg, déroule dans une marche confiante le long fil d'Ariane de chaque mouvement éclairant comme dans un dernier regard le labyrinthe intérieur. Mieux le dire et le faire pour mieux s'en défaire. Exigeant un sens aiguisé de l'architecture ainsi qu'une grande variété de nuances et de couleurs, cette musique semblant réconcilier Prokofiev (économie de moyen favorisant la fulgurance) et Chostakovitch (expansion dans la durée, méandres en moins) invite chaque auditeur à méditer, à sonder l'apparente opacité, à continuer d'avancer, notamment dans la connaissance d'un grand compositeur tardivement réhabilité. The Echo Klassik prizewinner Elisaveta Blumina numbers among the outstanding female musicians of the younger generation who pursue their own paths, unaffected by any sort of »star cult.« Along with the classical piano repertoire, Elisaveta Blumina occupies herself very intensively with the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Her internationally highly regarded recordings of the Soviet Jewish composer Mieczys³aw Weinberg, to whose rediscovery she is tirelessly committed, are among the projects documenting this involvement. For cpo she has now recorded three sonatas by Weinberg. The clear proportions and modest length of the Sonatina op. 49 led Weinberg to rework it in 1978 in order to expand its structure, lengthen it into the Sonata op. 49 bis, and to readjust its balance. In this sonata of classical design Weinberg further developed the spectrum of musical expression and increased the technical demands when compared to his Sonata No. 2 and the Sonatina. The Sonata op. 49 numbers among the few productions for the concert hall from this creative phase, which was reserved for intensive occupation with film music – and in particular for animated films. Emil Gilels recorded the Sonata No. 4 in 1960. Unlike the version by this dedicatee, which maintains a swift tempo, Elisaveta Blumina’s slower, more intensive playing lends greater expression to the work’s drama and grief.
