The album features complete solo piano works by Marian Borkowski, an outstanding composer, pianist and musicologist. They were created in 1955–1977, hence they belong to the early period of his oeuvre. They are arranged chronologically, which allows us to trace the evolution of the creator’s style. From simple miniatures composed before his studies, through the Rachmaninoffesque Preludes, the extremely Polish Mazurkas, the Romantic Variations, to the avant-garde rhythm-driven and percussive Fragmenti and anunexpected return to Neo-Romanticism in the stylized Interludes of an improvised nature. The composer’s hallmark is staying faithful to his personal musical reflection in spite of trends but also the technique of a virtuoso pianist (the composer recorded selected cycles of his own works in the past). Brilliantly performed by Marek Szlezer, known for his numerous excellent interpretations of contemporary and Romantic music, the complete collection of Borkowski’s piano works confirms the composer’s original contribution to the 20th-century piano art.
