 C'est clair et net, voire clarinette, François Benda a de qui tenir, descendant de la famille de musiciens du 18ème siècle. Suisse né au Brésil, il a pour parents deux pianistes, son père Sébastien l'accompagnant ici (lui de père violoniste et mère pianiste, élève d'Edwin Fischer, Jorg Demus et Barenboim). Professeur à Berlin et Bâle, il a enregistré Schumann et Brahms, connu de grands partenaires comme Holliger, Badura-Skoda ou Isabelle Faust. Outre ici Gershwin, Bernstein et Schulhoff, Joseph Horovitz est un viennois émigré en Angleterre avant la catastrophe nazie, chef et compositeur fécond pour instruments à vent, tandis que le suisse Schnyder (né en 1961), lui-même saxophoniste, prise fort le mariage de son instrument avec d'autres partenaires de chambre, tout en ayant commis une grande symphonie et beaucoup d'arrangements jazzeux. Cela nous donne "suisse generis" l'exécution parfaite de pièces alanguies ou primesautières, tendres ou malicieuses (Poulenc n'aurait pas déparé), dans une grâce dont l'accès, contrairement à celui d'une jeune fille en fleurs, demeure toujours facile. (Gilles-Daniel Percet) Once again the musicians of the Swiss Artist Consort embark on a musical expedition: with this album, phenomenal clarinetist François Benda is releasing what is already his sixth GENUIN CD. All the pieces are “kind of jazz” – and “kind of” is a fitting description. They inhabit the exciting threshold between so-called serious music and jazz, from the pivotal figure of Gershwin to contemporary composer Daniel Schnyder, whose has been dancing zestfully among all the genres since the 80s. The program selection and stunningly beautiful playing by Sebastian Benda (piano) and his son François make us sit up and listen, and the works by Joseph Horovitz and Leonard Bernstein are true discoveries.
