Après Frédéric « Le Grand » et ses concertos pour flûte, van Wassenaer et ses concertos grosso (jadis attribués à Pergolèse), voici enfin venir le prince Johann Ernst de Saxe-Weimar et ses concertos pour violon. Rien de tel qu’un enregistrement comme celui-ci pour réhabiliter la notion de dilettante dévaluée en terme péjoratif sitôt disparu avec l’Ancien Régime le signe distinctif qui lui était naturellement associé. L’homme devrait d’emblée gagner la sympathie des mélomanes et plus particulièrement des dévots de Bach : sitôt revenu de son voyage d’études aux Pays-Bas en juillet 1713, il pria celui qui n’était encore qu’organiste à la cour de Weimar, mais qu’il estimait sans distinction de classe, de transcrire pour clavecin ou orgue les œuvres les plus remarquables qu’il avait rapportées d’Amsterdam, notamment le fameux « Estro Armonico » de Vivaldi publié deux ans plus tôt. Conscient de la saisissante nouveauté de ce recueil et certain de l’impact immédiat qu’il aurait sur l’Europe musicale, le jeune prince très éclairé consacra les deux années de vie qui lui restaient (il disparut à 18 ans !) à favoriser la diffusion de la nouvelle musique italienne en Allemagne. Outre Vivaldi (six concertos), Bach transcrivit deux œuvres des frères Marcello (eux aussi « nobles dilettantes »), une de Torelli et deux de Telemann. Ce dernier supervisa en 1718 la publication posthume de six concertos (op. 1) composés par Johann Ernst et dont Bach réalisa (antérieurement) trois transcriptions. Ces œuvres ne visant nullement l’originalité et manifestant une science de la composition honorable sont évidemment totalement imprégnées du style vivaldien. Le plaisir de l’audition n’en est pas moins présent et même augmenté par l’excellente idée de se faire succéder originaux et transcriptions. (Pascal Edeline)

The "Thuringia Cantat" series documents the diversity of music culture in this German region with exemplary compositions illustrating what is certainly a unique music history. On the present volume we remember and call attention to a musician and composer (on the occasion of what will soon be the three hundredth anniversary of his death) who died at any early age and hardly figures at all in today’s broad cultural memory: Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar. His original and brilliant concertos are now being presented in complete form for the first time on cpo, complemented and contextualized by the harpsichord transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach based on these works. The project was designed and supervised musicologically by Prof. Dr. Manfred Fechner from Jena, whom we also have to thank for the detailed, informative, and highly readable booklet text. Although Johann Ernst died at the age of eighteen after a severe illness, we have this highly gifted prince filled with youthful musical enthusiasm to thank for the substantial support lent to the instrumental concerto, which was still rather unknown in German territories at the beginning of the eighteenth century – this genre »born« in Italy would soon advance to the status of the epoch’s "guide musical form".
