 Né à Modène en 1632, engagé comme violoniste et chanteur à la cour de Ferdinand III d'Este avant d'en être trente ans plus tard le maître de chapelle, le compositeur Giovanni Battista Vitali contribua à l'élaboration de la Sonate baroque, particulièrement de la "Sonata a tre". Il composa dans tous les genres mais son corpus de sonates et son traité de composition "Artificiii Musicali" opèrent la synthèse entre le contrepoint des sonates "da chiesa" et l'invention mélodique des sonates "da camera". Sa musique de chambre eut une influence notable sur d'éminents musiciens dont Corelli, Purcell et Torelli. Il fut en outre le premier à introduire le menuet dans ses Suites. En ajoutant des bois, des cordes un luth un clavecin et même des percussions, l'Italico Splendore nous donne une version enrichie de son opus 14 qui a plus à voir avec le Concerto grosso alla Corelli qu'avec la sonata da camera traditionnelle. Ces six Suites composées en 1692 sont constituées de danses populaires italiennes (Boréa, et zoppa), dont le roboratif Ballo d'ouverture, complété de danses de style français (Menuet, gigue, gavotte et courante). Le traitement folklorisant peu regardant d'authenticité (Hormis le tempérament et les instruments historiques) de l'ensemble italien au nom prédestiné convient parfaitement à cette musique goûteuse et festive qui ne laissera personne sur le carreau. Thanks to Duke Francesco ii’s fondness for the violin, music became an essential element in the most important events at the Este court, such as receptions, weddings and official visits of foreign sovereigns. These were the occasions in which the Duke displayed all his magnificence. Modena stands out for the abundance of its collection of musical documents in the Biblioteca Estense: the library is a real mine, largely unexplored so far.This consideration gave rise to the idea of making this beautiful, extraordinarily modern music available to those who are “pursuing” culture and art. So our goal is to promote a rediscovery of the enormous heritage preserved in the Biblioteca Estense, by carrying out a meticulous study of the sources of the works of the composers who were active at the Este Court in Modena, transcribing them into modern notation and critical editions, and producing monographic recordings of them.The first step consisted in the study and recording of the instrumental works of Giovanni BattistaVitali. In this first of 6 CDs dedicated to his music preserved in the Estense Library of Modena, the baroque group Italico Splendore presents the very pleasant dances of the Chamber Sonatas op. 14.
