Gerald Finzi By Footpath and Stile Et Autres Œuvres De Musique De Chambre Farnsworth Plane Bolister

Quoique bien moins connu que Ralph Vaughan Williams ou Benjamin Britten, Gerald Finzi n’en a pas moins composé de la très belle musique. Son style, qu’on peut plus ou moins rattacher au romantisme tardif, possède des couleurs très britanniques : climats évoquant une campagne rêveuse, mélancolie aux épanchements retenus et doux-amers, mélange de simplicité et de subtilité harmonique. Les mélodies de « By Footpath and Stile », composées sur des textes de Thomas Hardy pour baryton et quatuor à cordes chantent le regret des vies et du temps perdus. Avec l’Interlude pour hautbois et quatuor, c’est la seule œuvre proposée ici dans sa forme originale. Les quatre autres ont été arrangées pour quatuor (trois l’ont été spécifiquement pour le quatuor Finzi) par Christian Alexander, qui a également écrit le texte du livret. L’ensemble, interprété et enregistré avec talent, nous entraîne, par sentiers et échaliers, le long de champs et de haies imaginaires où l’âme solitaire s’épanche avec douceur. Synonymous with British music from the first half of the twentieth century, composer Gerald Finzi (1901–1956) left an unmistakable and inimitable footprint on the musical landscape of the era. Resonus is pleased to present a stunning selection of his works featuring a stellar collaboration between the award-winning Finzi Quartet, baritone Marcus Farnsworth, clarinettist Robert Plane, and oboist Ruth Bolister. With two of his works for string quartet – the early By Footpath and Stile, and the Interlude for Oboe and String Quartet – the recording also features four arrangements for string quartet by Christian Alexander, including the popular Five Bagatelles, recorded here for the first time.
