Friedrich Cerha’s output has solid roots in an exte nded musical tradition, while spanning a wide arc from the beginnings of new music all the way to the present. This is not only due to the composer’s respectable age, but primarily to the great number of activities he has pursued in the course of his long life, along w ith the great variety of influences he has incorporated int o his work. He was still under the spell of Late Ro manticism when he enrolled in 1945 in the Musikakademie in Vi enna; in the course of his studies, he wrote a seri es of Neo*Classical divertimentos, capriccios, toccatas, suites, sonatas and sonatinas in the style of Strav insky and Hindemith, the main role models of the day. Cerha’s studies of German literature and musicology at Vie nna University led to a doctorate thesis in 1950 on “Th e Turandot Legend in German Literature”. In the 1950s Cerha came in contact with representa tives of the Second Viennese School – particularly with Josef Polnauer, who had studied from 1909 with Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, and had helped Schoenberg organize the recitals of the Society for Private Musical Performances. Thanks to Polnauer a s a direct eye* and earwitness, Cerha gleaned valuable advice regarding how one should analyze and interpr et the works of that school. At the Darmstadt Internationa l Summer Courses for New Music in 1956, he attended seminars given by violinist Rudolf Kolisch and pian ist Eduard Steuermann, who had prepared performance s of works by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern in collaborati on with the composers themselves. Cerha passed on t his firsthand knowledge to the next generations in his numerous articles, in his post as Professor for Com position, Notation and Interpretation of New Music at the Mus ikakademie (which became the Vienna Conservatory of Music), in his performances as a violinist, and las t not least as a conductor of ensembles, orchestras and operas, much in demand on the international new music scene. Cerha then opened up his music to influences from o ther continents, such as polyrhythm and microtonali ty. In maqam (1989), the first of four string quartets, he used Arabian scales with quarter*tones and corresp onding complex rhythms. Starting with Catalogue des objets trouvés (1969) and fully with the composition of th e Brecht*based opera Baal (1974–80), Cerha’s style st arted featuring direct links with traditional expression, melodiousness, harmony and structures ranging from the Baroque Age to the early 20th century. His most recent duo and trio pieces pay homage to Bach, Berg , Schoenberg and to his own previous works, includi ng a series of direct quotes. Rooted in tradition yet en tirely at home in the present, Friedrich Cerha’s mu sic certainly builds new kinds of bridges. Yet these ar e no flimsy constructions dangerously suspended ove r a yawning chasm; instead, his pieces are like sturdy viaducts with several arches firmly planted in diff erent varieties of soil.
