Voici le troisième (et dernier?) volet du projet piloté par Ernst Theis et son orchestre la Staastsoperette de Dresde en partenariat avec la Deutscheradio Kultur. Son but : nous plonger dans l’Allemagne des années vingt où la radio et les nouveaux moyens de diffusion et d’enregistrement étaient en plein essor. Nécessité pour les directeurs artistiques de diversifier leur programme avec des créations originales de musique sérieuse ou "légère" signées des compositeurs en vogue et d’autres moins connus et parmi eux des musiciens juifs tels Pavel Haas qui ouvre le programme en fanfare dans une ode déjantée pour solistes et orchestre intitulée "Predera pro roziahs". Chaque soliste incarnant tour à tour : le son, la fréquence, le micro et le haut-parleur. Loufoque et irrésistible. Suit Paul Hindemith, familier de cette "Gebrauchsmusik" et très concerné par les progrès technologiques ; avec la ballade pour "Sabinchen" qui évoque la figure d’un sombre personnage de fait divers. On goûte le style mécaniste et excentrique du compositeur. "Mord" (Meurtre) de Walter Gronostay, pièce radiophonique de cet élève de Schoenberg, participe du même univers : expressionniste. Frénétique et saisissant. Passons sur Kurt Weill et son "Berliner Requiem" (Avec les textes de Brecht). "Bankel und Balladen" du viennois Wilhelm Grosz nous transporte dans le monde du cabaret. Sur la scène enfumée et bruyante, le baryton Kurt Gerron, sa muse (Soprano) et son accompagnement jazzy avec saxophone banjo et percussions. Entre Broadway et du Weill d’opérette. Enfin le micro-opéra Jorinde und Joringel du suisse Heinrich Sutermeister, aidé de Werner Egk, l’homme à tout faire du Radiomusiken, évoque par son style les œuvres similaires de Carl Orff. Certainement l’oeuvre la plus originale du volume. Une collection captivante pour deux raisons : musicale (Compositeurs essentiels, œuvres rares) et historique (La période de l’entre-deux guerre en Allemagne). (Jérôme Angouillant)

In 1929, six years after the official start of German radio, an exciting atmosphere of new beginnings continued to prevail in the boardrooms where artistic, cultural, and political program editors held their meetings. The number of officially registered radio listeners was higher than ever, and the new medium enjoyed unprecedented popularity ratings. Editors had to produce attractive programs, and the pressure on them to do so had dramatically increased. However, the artistic directors of the music departments wanted to offer more than just concert broadcasts and news reports. They wanted »radiophonic« music proper to the new medium – music made to order for the technical capabilities of the loudspeaker, which at the time was beginning its triumphant march and supplanting the very uncomfortable earphones, music also made to order for the acoustical circumstances in the recently constructed broadcasting halls. And so our third Radio Music CD box with works from this period once again features the magic of the radio: its sound, the invisible wave, the microphone, and the loudspeaker. This time musical radio plays form the focus – like the radio play Sabinchen by Paul Hindemith, the audio play Mord by Walter Gronostay, and even the radio opera Jorinde und Joringel by Heinrich Sutermeister. A world all of its own with unique, intensive expressive opportunities and possibilities!
