Martin Nöbauer, piano (Pianos Pleyel, 1829, 1830, 1838, 1842; Piano Erard, 1853)

Le jeune pianiste autrichien Martin Nöbauer a été finaliste en 2023 du deuxième Concours International Frédéric Chopin de Varsovie sur instruments d’époque. Cet enregistrement, réalisé sur trois instruments Pleyel construits en 1829, 1830 et 1842, et sur un Erard de 1853 permet de renouveler l’écoute de ces œuvres célèbres, toutes composées entre 1841 et 1844 (3ème Sonate, 4ème Ballade, Fantaisie op. 49, 3 Mazurkas op. 50, 3ème Impromptu). Chopin donnait souvent le conseil à ses élèves de « chanter avec les doigts ». Cela prend ici tout son sens tant ces instruments possèdent une musicalité propre et différenciée, parfaitement audible au disque. Martin Nöbauer use avec beaucoup de goût et d’intelligence d’un lyrisme délicat et élégant pour faire chanter chaque instrument et lui donner une respiration adaptée. Son jeu s’adapte aux sonorités claires et directes des quatre pianos pour redonner à chaque pièce des intonations et des tempos plus justes, personnalisés et éloquents qu’avec les pianos modernes. Martin Nöbauer possède non seulement une technique pianistique éblouissante mais aussi un sens musical remarquable, respectant chaque inflexion de la partition, comme dans la Fantaisie ou cette fin magistrale de la quatrième Ballade. “You have to sing with your fingers!” – Frédéric Chopin is said to have often demanded of his pupils during piano lessons. On which instruments could this demand be better realized than on the pianos of his time that he preferred? For this recording, the young Austrian pianist Martin Nöbauer selected five historical instruments that were built between 1829 and 1853. Although there are only 24 years in between, the development in sound aesthetics from the rather thin and transparent sound of the earlier instruments to the fuller, rounder sound of the Pleyel grand piano from 1842 and especially the Érard grand piano from 1853 is clearly perceptible. The works chosen for this album were composed in close temporal proximity to the creation of the instruments: the Piano Sonata in B minor op. 58, the Impromptu in G-flat major op. 51, the Mazurkas op. 50 as well as the Ballade op. 52 and the Fantaisie op. 49, both in F minor.
