Ce triple disque est un défi pour les amateurs d’opéra : Bernhard Lang y réinvente le Parsifal de Richard Wagner, ce « Bühnenweihfestspiel » (festival scénique sacré) créé en 1882 à Bayreuth. Il s’appuie pour ce faire sur l’enregistrement de Pierre Boulez, ce chef alors à peine reconnu comme tel qui, en août 1966, à Bayreuth lui aussi, créait la surprise avec une interprétation « pure, rigoureuse et poétique, paradoxale par son objectivité et ce qu'on pourrait appeler son "laïcisme" ». Et Lang, bien sûr, va plus loin, fidèle à cette idée - où l’ironie n’est jamais loin - de « recyclage » du patrimoine musical historique, qu’il explore dans son cycle Monadologie, notamment à l’aide de processus de filtrage et de mutation. C’est ainsi que ParZeFool se colore, au fur et à mesure de son développement, de touches atonales, d’interventions jazz, voire hip-hop, autant de gauchissements, de torsions - de trahisons, diront certains -, de la partition originale. De même le livret se voit-il expurgé de ses références (pseudo-)religieuses, au profit de boucles plus petites : Lang affectionne ce système de boucle, véritable « microscope temporel », par lequel la répétition amplifie des événements sinon à peine perceptibles. Bernhard Lang’s reimagination of Wagner’s Parsifal is the continuation of his Monadologie series, which includes pieces by other musical bigwigs such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. ParZeFool’s dimensions are based on the Boulez recording of the original, yet something is definitely off with Lang’s Parsifal. As time progresses, stark atonal passages as well as jazzand hip-hop influences begin to rub up against the original score. The original libretto is stripped of all Christian and pseudo-religious references, cut into smaller bits and pieces, and finally, looped into infinity and pushing far beyond Wagner’s notion of the “Leitmotiv”. This recording is a must for all opera lovers – and haters!
