Beethoven by Arrangement, Ensemble DeNOTE's new CD release, is an exploration of two Beethoven 'selfies'. Reworking his ever popular Septet, Op.20 (as a Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano) and the Quintet for Piano and Winds, Op.16 (as a Piano Quartet with strings), Beethoven reveals remarkable sensitivity to sonority and texture in recapturing his original expressive intentions through new instrumental combinations. His 'second thoughts' are given added freshness and clarity by Ensemble DeNOTE's creative use of period instruments and playing styles.
