 « Violoncelle baroque » indique l’éditeur, un étonnant instrument d’un facteur anonyme de Prague, daté circa 1700, que Jiri Barta joue avec un archet baroque confectionné par Martin Opulstil en 2004. La touche est profonde, l’instrument tout autant, qui chante loin et fait entendre des registres contrastés dont les liaisons sont parfois âpres. Mais justement cette âpreté va comme un gant au jeu très libre du violoncelliste. Pour historiquement informé qu’il soit, - Jiri Barta se réclame de l’approche d’Anner Bylsma - son interprétation ne s’en trouve pas pour autant corsetée, elle chante même bien plus que celle du hollandais, large, appuyée, volontaire, un peu à la manière de Casals : le catalan n’aurait pas méprisé cet archet impérieux qui marque les danses du talon et donne aux portées de Bach quelque chose d’infiniment terrien. C’est le grain si particulier de cette belle caisse qui fait la moitié du prix de cette lecture libre, si lyrique, si intense, peu soucieuse d’un beau son, lui préférant l’urgence du jeu, la plénitude de l’expression, si rarement trouvée dans les interprétations sur instrument d’époque, souvent prisonnières de leurs théories. Ce pas de coté dans l’évolution de l’interprétation des Suites ne doit pas passer inaperçu, écoutez seulement la 5e Suite, stupéfiante d’intensité. With this new album he returns to the same repertoire which he recorded 23 years ago, but enriched with life experience and offering anew interpretation. This time he has recorded all the suites on a baroque cello with gut strings and thus has come closer to the possible original sound; expressivity has been superseded by meditation and peacefulness. Bártaapproaches the set of compositions as a six-movement symphony (“I remember the time when I performed the suites for the first time years ago. It felt like an epiphany: the individual suites materialized for me in a definiteshape as a symphony in six movements, as a story of life in six chapters, as a perfectly logical and thoroughly structured large composition.”). Bárta spent a long time studying the material and preparing the new interpretationand recording which has the aspiration to become the classical-music event of the season.
