The study of Bach’s Cello Suites plays a fundamental part in the education of any cellist. In them full use is made of all the registers of the cello. While the technical difficulties increase from the first to the sixth Suite, should they become an end in themselves, the possibilities provided by mere technical prowess would soon prove limited. It is when music beckons it, pulls it in its stride and sets it on the path of interpretation, that technique becomes spiritualized : from then on, its possibilities are nearly boundless. For all these artists, the cello is not merely the contact of hands and legs, but also of the heart and of the human body as a whole.
