 Le violoncelliste brésilien Antonio Meneses né en 1957 n'est plus à présenter, sa carrière internationale lui a fait rencontrer les plus grands chefs (Karajan avec Mutter et Berlin) et solistes mondiaux (Joao Pires, Pressler...). Il fit partie du Beaux-Art Trio entre 1997 et 2006 et joue régulièrement en formation de chambre. Sa discographie est assez éclectique, Carl Philipp et Jean Sébastien Bach (Les Suites 1997) Eugen d'Albert, Haydn (Concertos). Pour fêter ses soixante ans, Antonio Meneses a choisi (en collaboration avec son compatriote le chef Claudio Cruz) deux concertos (Schumann et Saint-Saëns) et les Variations sur un thème Rococo de Tchaikovski, trois œuvres qui convoquent deux facettes de son talent : virtuosité et sensibilité. Dans le Schumann le jeu chaud et subtilement vibré du brésilien fait merveille, relayé par un orchestre réaliste et la direction souple de Cruz. L'ensemble distillant un parfum romantique ineffable. Le Saint-Saëns est plus quelconque (L'Allegretto) mais toujours irréprochable dans l'équilibre soliste-orchestre. Quant aux Variations sur un thème Rococo, (œuvre qui lui valut une médaille au concours Tchaikovski à Moscou en 1982), Meneses y déploie aujourd'hui un jeu d’une tendresse, d'une affectivité inédite empêchant toute virtuosité factice. Early, seminal recordings with Herbert von Karajan led to further, phenomenal success and recognition of Antonio’s beguiling combination of virtuoso élan and thoughtful introspection. His tenth recording for AVIE, these first concertante recordings form a vital part of his series for the label that includes several cornerstones of the cello repertoire, including Bach’s Six Cello Suites, the complete cello music by Beethoven (with pianist Menahem Pressler), the two Haydn concertos, and the Grammy-nominated pairing of concertos by Hans Gál and Edward Elgar for which he was joined by Claudio Cruz and the Royal Northern Sinfonia, as he is on this new release.
