Andriessen a touché à tous les domaines de la musique, en particulier la musique religieuse. Influencé par César Franck et Diepenbrock il sut développer un style très personnel proche de la contemplation et de la dévotion. Sa deuxième Symphonie en trois mouvements ressemble plutôt à une fantaisie qu’à une symphonie. L’écriture y est plus évoluée et la structure plus compliquée que dans la première. Le Ricercare est basé sur le ricercare instrumental des 16e et 17e siècles. Il en résulte une partition concise et étonnante, parfois sévère. La deuxième partie, Lento, intègre le motif B-A-C-H qui dans l’Allegro final fait partie du tissu du contrepoint construit avec les idées de la première partie. Dans le Mascherato, chaque mouvement représente un personnage tiré de la Commedia del’ Arte pour donner une œuvre orchestrale vive et de bonne humeur. Wilhelmus van Nassouwe, est une rapsodie sur le thème de l’hymne national ; le compositeur l’utilise avec parcimonie jusqu’à la déclamation finale avec trompettes et trombones. Ce deuxième volume est admirablement joué par le Nederlands Symphonie Orkester sous David Porcelijn. (Alan McKay)

"Andriessen's music pulses relentlessly on in free tonality, with sparing use of exaggerated intervals or contrasts, always full-sounding, almost organ-like in its instrumentation. Energy-packed music played by a power-packed ensemble – a CD that can awaken the life-force in one." So wrote FonoForum in March 2013 of our first CD release with symphonic works by Andriessen. And our latest instalment Vol. 2 once again shows Andriessen to be a multifaceted composer. The thoroughly compact Second Symphony was written in 1937 for the 50th anniversary of the Concertgebouw Orkest and is dedicated to Eduard van Beinum, whom the orchestra chose as its Second Conductor (alongside Willem Mengelberg) in 1938. Emotionally, the work is in every respect a product of the Thirties. Technically, on the other hand, it seems closer to the Twenties. The harmony is more advanced than in the First Symphony. The complex structure is not so much symphonic as fantastic, and a fantasia is what it seems to be from the outset, as the first movement amply demonstrates. The instrumentation here recalls the mentor from whom Andriessen had learnt two decades earlier – Alphons Diepenbrock. The three other symphonic works on this CD provide further clear evidence of Andriessen's mastery, which over the years proved itself in two more symphonies and a score of other works for symphony or string orchestra.
