Ce disque fait écho à un mémorable concert donné au 14ème festival Fasch de Zerbst en avril 2017 sous l’égide de l’International Fasch Society... En guise de notice, nous avons même droit au texte du programme : une belle séance de rattrapage, en somme. Les auditeurs présents ont dû vivre un grand moment d’émotion avec la Messe en Sol : débarrassée spécialement pour l’occasion des « corrections » dues à Heinichen, elle culmine dans un Crucifixus stupéfiant. Comme le note Bert Siegmund dans son introduction, la musique sacrée de Fasch est entièrement subordonnée aux mots : tous les effets (orchestration, jeux de métrique) sont là pour les mettre en valeur en déstabilisant l’auditeur... c’est réussi ! On doit au même Bert Siegmund (président de l’IFS) la nouvelle édition de la suite en La, enregistrée ici, pour la première fois je crois. Virevoltante et colorée, Fasch reconnaissait lui-même tout ce qu’elle doit à Telemann : difficile de le contredire. Quant à la cantate piétiste qui clôt le disque, elle transgresse les codes du genre tout en permettant d’entendre plus longuement les solistes. Pour eux comme pour les deux ensembles cette musique doit être très gratifiante à interpréter, donnant à chacun l’occasion de se mettre en valeur ponctuellement sans pour autant laisser prise au vedettariat. Tous maîtrisent à merveille ce style particulier (qui coûtât peut-être à Fasch la place de Thomaskantor qui échut finalement à Bach) et les rares imprécisions sont à mettre au débit du « live » (d’autant que la suite ouvrait, je crois, le concert) : un vrai régal à ne pas rater. As the court music director in Zerbst, Johann Friedrich Fasch had to deal directly with current religious trends and was obliged to occupy himself with Pietism. After all, from the beginning of his tenure there his duties had included the composition of the church music for every court religious service and for all the church feast days. Fasch had a special mission in mind when he penned his cantatas: he was very much interested in having hislisteners not remain indifferent to the texts that were sung. And so he employed all sorts of compositional tricks to capture their attention and to emphasize words of special importance to him. This procedure is impressively revealed already at the beginning of the cantata »Ich danke dem Herrn vom ganzen Herzen.« After a short instrumental introduction the opening Biblical text is presented not as usual by the choir but initially by the solo soprano. Then in the Missa in G major almost all the facets of Fasch’s musical talent are shown; from arias with obbligato solo instruments to grandly dimensioned chorale fugues placing the greatest demands both on the singers and the instrumentalists, it was composed in its entirety for the entertainment and edification of his noble employer and to the glory of God. One of Fasch’s overture suites of extraordinary quality rounds off this CD. In his autobiography he acknowledged : "On this occasion I cannot avoid publicly acknowledging that I then learned mostly everything from the beautiful work of my most revered and beloved friend, Mr. Music Director Telemann, by constantly taking the same as a model for me, especially in the overtures".
