Arrivé à Hambourg, Haendel, tout juste vingt ans, écrit son premier opéra, où se mêlent comme le veut l’usage du temps langue allemande et airs parfois en italien, où s’avoue son admiration des ouvrages lyriques de Reinhardt Keiser qui règne alors sur la scène hanséatique et dont il est le premier violon. Keiser applaudira Almira, accueillant avec générosité son auteur et lui procurera un deuxième livret, celui de « Nero », opéra perdu comme le suivant « Die verwandelte Daphne ». Almira est donc l’unique opéra de l’époque hambourgeoise qui nous soit parvenu, partition immature certes, mais où toute la fougue d’Haendel s’emploie à illustrer les émotions, les états d’âme, faisant son théâtre bien plus moderne que ceux de Keiser ou de Hasse. Le voyage en Italie transformera ses essais lyriques en vrai théâtre dramatique, et ce dés Rodrigo que Florence verra à l’automne 1707. CPO a de la suit dans les idées, voici vingt-six ans il en offrait la première gravure mondiale, assemblant autour de l’Almira grand teint d’Ann Monoyios une distribution choisie où brillaient l’Edilia de Patricia Rozario, le Consalvo de David Thomas, le Ferrando de Jamie MacDougall. Depuis et malgré la noria d’opéra de Haendel que le disque ne cesse de découvrir ou de revisiter, personne ne s’était penché sur les amours contrariés de la Reine de Castille. Injustice ! que répare aujourd’hui la captation en concert d’une distribution qui aura rodé l’œuvre à la scène dans la jolie production du Boston Early Music Festival et ce dès 2013 : cette fois, contrairement au premier enregistrement, l’œuvre est bien complet, prenant quatre disques en place de trois auparavant. Enregistré patiemment dans la belle acoustique de la Sendesaal de Brème du 21 janvier au 1e février 2018, la jolie troupe assemblée autour de l’Almira sensible d’Emöke Barak dévoile toute la lyrique d’une œuvre subtile jusque dans ses hésitations. Mentions spéciales au terrible Osman de Zachary Wilder, et à l’Edilia d’Amanda Forsythe, au Fernando de Colin Blazer, tous sont portés par l’orchestre versicolore, pleins de cordes pincées et de chalumeaux que viennent piquer quelques castagnettes, mené de son luth par Paul O’Dette sous le regard bienveillant de Stephen Stubbs. Plus d’une fois la musique si inventive du jeune Haendel se pare d’une touche mélancolique qu’Andrew Lawrence-King ne sollicitait pas à ce point dans la précédente version : le ton élégiaque de la nouvelle contrebalance l’éclairage plus dramatique de la première. The Boston Early Music Festival has recorded George Frideric Handel’s very first opera, Almira, Queen of Castile, with a superlatively sumptuous ensemble. For its previous recordings of Baroque operas this successful ensemble has won prizes such as the Grammy, the German Record Critics Annual Prize, and the Echo Klassik. The Hungarian soprano Emõke Baráth sings the role of Almira with a choice ensemble of singers, all of whom have performed in the world’s most renowned concert halls and opera houses. Handel’s Almira is based on a freely invented plot featuring fine entertainment in the form of love and marriage schemes among the nobility, infidelity and mistaken identities, and a happy ending brought about by a court servant’s negotiations. This work was presented at the Hamburg Opera House in 1705 about twenty times and with great success. At the time Reinhard Keiser was the director of the Hamburg Opera, and he merits great praise for giving the young Handel, who then was earning his livelihood as a second tutti violinist in the orchestra pit, to compose and present an opera under his supervision. Handel’s Almira would as a work not be imaginable apart from the special circumstances prevailing at the Hamburg Opera: various styles and various languages are mixed, and it includes German and Italian arias, vocal dance numbers and da capo pieces, as well as instrumental ballet inserts of larger format. The result is indeed a colorful mixture, and the melodic signature so typical of Handel is already omnipresent and creates a fascinating unity – now heard with a top-quality ensemble!
