 De Cracovie à New York où il connut un grand succès jusqu’à sa mort en 1946, en passant par Paris, le parcours de Stojowski a été complexe. Les œuvres présentées ici entendent témoigner de plusieurs étapes de cet itinéraire, incluant des compositions de jeunesse, quelques mélodies françaises et des opus plus tardifs. Plutôt que postromantiques, certaines partitions, volontiers exaltées, parfois jusqu’à la grandiloquence, sonnent « fin de siècle » et tendent facilement vers le haut de la tessiture, ce qui ne facilite pas toujours la tâche de la soprano. Elles bénéficient cependant de superbes accompagnements pianistiques, éloquents parce que très fouillés. La fin du programme présenté, plus proche des sources populaires, et incluant des compositions de jeunesse comme de la maturité, se révèle plus attrayante parce que finalement moins démodée. Elle recèle de réelles petites merveilles, bien servies par les interprètes. On regrettera une nouvelle fois que le texte des poèmes ne soit pas accessible, ni dans le livret ni, à défaut, via un site internet. Toujours à propos du livret (polonais et anglais), ses notes pourraient être davantage informatives et moins anecdotiques. (Alain Monnier) Thanks to Joseph Herter and the source materials he provided, for almost twenty years, the achievements and person of the post-Romantic emigrant composer Zygmunt Stojowski has been returning from the depths of oblivion, which contributes to him regaining his rightful position in the history of music of the Polish nation. Zygmunt Stojowski is increasingly recognised and appreciated as a composer, pianist, and an outstanding teacher. His piano, symphonic, and chamber music work has become the subject of research and has been increasingly appearing in the repertoires of world concert halls. While piano works have become slightly more recognisable due to increasingly numerous performances, Stojowski’s vocal and instrumental pieces are still known to a very narrow audience. Thanks to the extremely valuable CD initiative of Magdalena Molendowska and Julia Samojlo, this unfavourable situation may soon change, and music lovers will have a great opportunity to discover works of one of the greatest Polish composers of the turn of the 20th century.
