 Jonian Ilias Kadesha (violon) et Vashti Hunter (violoncelle) proposent, dans ce voyage à deux, quatre pièces reliées entre elles par la brillance et la vitalité de la musique folk. Dhipli Zyia, créée près de cinquante ans après son écriture par Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) – il a, dès 1947, fui en France la guerre civile grecque -, est une composition très éloignée de son goût pour l’avant-garde et l’expérimentation sous influence des mathématiques : danse traditionnelle de son pays, elle évoque la fougue, la mélancolie et la nostalgie des Balkans. Pour son Duo pour violoncelle et violon, op. 7, Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) a trempé son inspiration directement dans le folklore de Hongrie et de Transylvanie, dont il arpente les campagnes avec son ami Béla Bartók pour enregistrer des chants locaux et mettre en évidence leurs influences orientales : le morceau, aux accents particulièrement évocateurs, requiert une excellente maîtrise de l‘instrument. Avec la Sonatine d’Arthur Honegger (1892-1955), on change d’atmosphère : une structure orthodoxe pour une floraison de styles, disparates mais subtilement agencés - écoutez les accointances du troisième mouvement avec le cabaret. Cabaret dont on retrouve des traces, mêlées de folklore grec et d’impacts de la Seconde Ecole Viennoise dans le dernier duo, signé Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949). (Bernard Vincken) When choosing the title of this CD, we were immediately drawn to the title of the first piece in our recording, Dhipli Zyia by Xenakis, which simply translates as ‘a band of two folk musicians’. After delving more deeply, we discovered that Zyia derives from the ancient Greek word ‘balance’, which is such a vitally important element of chamber music, and indeed – in any relationship. Fittingly, Zyia is also another name for Hera, the Goddess of marriage from ancient Greek mythology. This CD symbolises an important part of a journey for us – not only as partners in chamber music – but also as a celebration of our friendship……… Our recording centres around pieces which celebrate the joy and vibrancy of folk music, opening with music by Xenakis from the Balkans in Greece, Jonian’s birthplace, then venturing north to Hungary for the Kodály, west to Switzerland/France for the Sonatina by Honegger and finally returning to Greece for a rarely performed duo by Skalkottas. We are both in love with folk music, particularly from the Balkans, and hope to pass on some of the joy it brings us when playing it!
