Petras Vyshniauskas, soprano saxophone
Christoph Baumann, piano
Jacques Siron, double bass

Music between Stravinsky and jazz, luxuriously poetic and strongly accented The Lithuanian saxophonist Petras Vyshniauskas and the two Swiss musicians Christoph Baumann and Jacques Siron met during an adventurous Swiss-Lithuanian exchange project. Four weeks on the road through Russia, the Baltics and Switzerland wiped away all scepticism that had hindered a love at first sight and in the meanwhile the trio has proven considerable continuity. Vyshniauskas has lent his wonderful soprano sax to several formations such as "Les Passeurs d'Instants", "Mentalities" or the large project "Limmat Magic" all conducted by Baumann or Siron. The three musicians share an exceptional musicality and the capability to capture emotions in sounds. Vyshniauskas, no doubt Lithuania's best saxophonist, adds his extraordinary talent in inventing melodies, Baumann, experienced in music for theatre, contributes to the rhythmical structuring whereas Siron surprises with unexpected ideas, giving the tales to be told new twists and turns. "Nuit Balte" (Baltic Night) was recorded in two sessions, the first a kind of "after hour" product around midnight after the recording session to "Les Passeurs d'Instants" (Plainisphare PL 1267-81), the second at the radio studio in Zurich. This cultural balancing act combines the improvisational talents tested on tour: Vyshniauskas' spaciousness of the orient, Jacques Siron's uncanny and yet Mediterranean style of bass playing and Christoph Baumann's rhythmical and conceptual approach to the piano. The result is music between Stravinsky and jazz, luxuriously poetic and strongly accented. The CH-Dance Theatre has made use of part of this CD for its most recent production ONO (choreography: Tsutsomu Ben Ida).
