Intarissable source d’inspiration pour de nombreux musiciens, l’œuvre de William Shakespeare influenca Giuseppe Verdi sa vie entière durant. Trois opéras – MacBeth, Otello et Falstaff - pièces majeures du répertoire du compositeur, émanèrent de cette relation forte au dramaturge anglais. Macbeth, véritable révolution dans le théâtre de Verdi et dans l’opéra italien, lui apporta après plusieurs années difficiles une renommée internationale qu’Otello et Falstaff, ses 2 dernières compositions lyriques, achevèrent d’asseoir définitivement. Opus Arte réuni enfin dans cette nouvelle édition ces trois opéras à la distribution vocale impressionnante, à la direction impeccable et à la mise en scène toujours inspirée. Dans les rôles titres, Simon Keenlyside et Liudmyla Monastyrska campent d’imposants Lord et Lady Macbeth dans une mise en scène remarquable de Phyllida Lloyd, tandis que José Cura y interprète le général maure avec une rare intensité dans l’Otello imaginé par Willy Decker au Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelone. La production du Flastaff de Richard Jones au festival de Glyndebourne irradie, elle, par son humour caustique, cynique presque, et est portée par un impeccable casting international, Christopher Purves en tête, sous la baguette toujours inspirante de Vladimir Jurowski. Une fort belle conclusion après 2 opéras dramatiques qui rappelle les mots même de Verdi qui affirma lors de la composition de Falstaff avoir enfin « gagné le droit de rire un peu ».

Shakespeare provided lifelong inspiration for the towering operatic genius that was Giuseppe Verdi, but just three of the Bard’s plays ever emerged fully-fledged from the composer’s pen. This trio of landmark productions, featuring a veritable constellation of singers, conductors and directors, are united here under the banner of Verdi’s Shakepeare Operas: Macbeth, which lifted the young composer out of his hard-working ‘galley years’, propelling him to international fame and universal acclaim, and Otello and Falstaff, his final two crowning operatic achievements. Simon Keenlyside and Liudmyla Monastyrska are imposing as the Thane and his Lady in Phyllida Lloyd’s sumptuous production of The Scottish Play for The Royal Opera, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, while José Cura interprets the Moor in a profound, intense staging by Willy Decker at Barcelona’s Liceu. By the end of his dramatic opera career, Verdi claimed he had ‘earned at last the right to laugh a little’, and Richard Jones’s Glyndebourne Festival production of Falstaff radiates humour, tinged with bitterness and wisdom and brought to life by an international ensemble cast with Christopher Purves in the title role under the inspiring baton of Vladimir Jurowski.
