De nos jours les opéras de « VW » sont rarement à l’affiche mais, étant donné le sujet, Sir John in Love l’est davantage ; il s’ajoute la longue liste de compositions inspirées du Bard et aux œuvres (Dittersdorf, Salieri, Nicolai, Verdi, Holst et Elgar) tirées des Joyeuses Commères de Windsor en particulier. A part quelques incorporations de textes de Marlowe et Jonson, le livret, écrit par VW lui-même, respecte la pièce d’origine. A l’encontre des études psychologiques de Nicolai et surtout Verdi, VW nous offre une fresque joyeuse de la bourgeoisie anglaise du 16e siècle. Composée entre les 3e et 4e symphonies, la musique n’a rien du grinçant et cassant de celles-ci, ni le mordant, par exemple, du Concerto pour deux pianos. Au contraire, dans le style le plus enjoué et harmonieux du compositeur, elle pétille de mélodie, utilisant au moins dix chants folkloriques, y compris la célébrissime Greensleeves, d’où est tirée la non moins célèbre Fantasia orchestrale. La qualité de l’enregistrement est excellente malgré une bande d’origine mono de 1956 enregistrée à partir d’une émission à la radio. (Rob MacAoidh)

Of all the musical forms essayed by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), his operas have received the least recognition or respect. Yet he was incontestably a man of the theatre. The first professional staging was given by Sadler’s Wells Opera in April 1946. In July 1958, less than a month before he died, the composer attended a performance at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. After this, it is thought not to have graced the professional stage in Britain again until 2 March 2006 when English National Opera revived the work at the London Coliseum. In this 1956 BBC studio recording, Roderick Jones makes an ideal F alstaff, commanding and vulnerable in equal measure. His love-song in Act II, ‘O that joy so soon should waste’ is both droll and touching. At the end of play, this butt of ridicule is allowed to become a Master of Ceremonies, conferring his blessing on all and it is a measure of Jones’s multilayered portrayal that the transformation is effected with ease and dignity. This portrayal is the jewel in the crown of a reading in which a whole community of colourful characters comes to life.
