 Uri Caine (Né en 1956) possède une double casquette de pianiste et d'arrangeur. L'équivalent américain d'un Michel Legrand déniaisé et mitteleuropa. Etudes classiques à Philadelphie auprès de Georges Crumb puis formé au piano avec Bernard Peiffer, il joue aussi bien en clubs (Ses disques en trio évoluent dans les hautes sphères du jazz - Bill Evans et Brad Meldhau) qu'en salle de concert. Il enregistre beaucoup, invitant pour l'occasion son propre ensemble, un orchestre de chambre ou des solistes de tous bords (Paolo Fresu, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, Hann Bennik, Theo Beckmann) avec qui il interprète ses propres arrangements de Wagner, Gershwin, Schumann, Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach ou Beethoven. En 2002, Caine intègre une formation baroque, le Concerto Köln, ses fabuleux instruments d'époque (On en trouve la liste exhaustive dans la notice du disque) et se procure un piano Erard datant de 1839, pour enregistrer ses arrangements des Variations Diabelli op. 120. Il s'agit, comme l’indique le pianiste, d'arrangements mais surtout d'improvisations issues du thème principal puis des nombreux motifs et variations qui balisent la partition, 34 au total. Manifestement Uri Caine à eu plaisir à exploiter les sonorités du piano Erard. Le thème de valse sonne comme un ragtime. L'orchestration elle jouit des merveilleux timbres des instruments du Concerto Köln tout en sonnant furieusement moderne, ce qui paraît logique étant donné la personnalité de l'arrangeur, respectueux de la lettre mais émancipé quant à l'esthétique avec de temps à autre quelques clins d’œil aux symphonies de maître de Bonn (Septième variation). Caine nourrissant sa lecture de multiples sources, Mahler, Respighi, Stravinski, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov et d'autres. Au final un exercice de style(s) jubilatoire. Each variations seems to be a new chorus like in the traditional style of jazz performances. This adaption is a new analysis of classical music by Uri Caine who has re-composed previously the music of Gustav Mahler, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann and Johann Sebastian Bach. Caine definds a new natural way to build a synthesis with classical music from the past and contemporary jazz. The artwork for this album is by the German architect Paul Schmitthenner. He created variations of a house like Beethoven hascomposed the variations of the waltz by Diabelli's waltz. Schmitthenner wrote: "From mouth to ear, from hand to hand, knowledge and experience are transmitted. In this process of transmission, something is divested from the old and added to the new, often unnoticed. Novelty, however, always grows on the soil of the old. If that which is new is better, then it is progress, man's sole worthy movement, progression toward a higher state of humanity. Only that which serves humanity is progress. Progress as a natural transformation of life, not change for the sake of change, change in its natural course". Uri Caine's Diabelli is progress, a change in its natural course.
