Le Schuhu ? Pour son dixième accouchement une mère met au monde un œuf d’où sort après une longue couvaison un enfant-oiseau, le Schuhu aux multiples dons mais rejeté de tous. Fuyant ce monde cruel il atterrit au duché de Cobourg-Gotha en guerre contre l'empereur de Mésopotamie (les escargots de l’empereur ont franchi la frontière et mangé les épinards du duc !). Le Schuhu tombera amoureux de la fille du roi de Tripoli à la si belle voix, elle-même l’objet de la convoitise des deux monarques jaloux. Les deux amants trouveront refuge dans une montagne céleste. Œuvre avant-gardiste à sa création à Dresde le 30 décembre 1976, cette parabole d’après le conte du dramaturge Peter Hacks sur la division du monde, le rejet de l’être différent, la quête d’amour et d’un monde idéal sonne très sagement aujourd’hui. Théâtre musical plus qu’opéra, l’œuvre est écrite pour deux orchestres de 17 musiciens, un quatuor de flûtes à bec, deux scies musicales et 16 voix plus un récitant. Mélodie populaire, vocalises, parlando, effets électroacoustiques et belles pages poétiques forment un univers sonore original de bout en bout. (Gérard Martin)

Opera in three acts by Udo Zimmermann A poor tailor and his wife are expecting a child, but instead of a human baby, the woman gives birth to an egg which hatches into a strange creature, half human, half bird: a Schuhu. Although his son is lovable and highly intelligent, the tailor cannot bear the town gossiping about him and chases him out of the house. Far, far away, the Schuhu meets the Flying Princess and they immediately feel a marvelous connection ... Based on the literary fairy tale of the same name by Peter Hacks, the Dresden composer Udo Zimmermann wrote an opera in 1976 about a world where mutually respectful dealings are sometimes difficult, and where many people find the new and unfamiliar suspicious and even threatening, and yet it is a world which also has a great longing for happiness and love.
