In Transit (CH/USA) Jazz / Instant Compositions Do you remember? As children we used to empty out the big toy box full of building blocks and create buildings and whole landscapes and enliven them with imaginary figures and actions. The Bernese saxophonist Jürg Solothurnmann and the far-traveled New Yorker pianist Michael Jefry Stevens are friends since several years. Now, at an age a bit more mature they still work for an evolution and a deepening of their music. Their quartet with Daniel Studer, bass, and Dieter Ulrich, drums, (both from Zürich) gradually developed into a strong unit. Collectively the four shape spontaneous compositions, fed from their extensive experiences with different kinds of the jazz, new classical music and other current styles and mentalities. Today, when a preconceived piece is successful this is beautiful and when I succeed in improvising a good solo - even more so. But it's simply exciting when I meet with like-minded musicians and we manage to create out of the blue a kind of music never heard before which amazes both us and the listeners. I guess I'm never so much awake and never exist so totally in the now as in such magical moments. After having for years gained experience by playing in various styles, jazz and other, I'm now mainly interested in the collective process of unpremeditated "instant composition". It's about shaping coherent events and expressing something without knowing in advance what it is and where it comes from. If the chemistry works the process becomes miraculous. We tap into our superego. The central aspect is the doing, the becoming, the way - and the passing. The results are different every time - moving stills. Jürg Solothurnmann
