Voici un disque subtil de pièces pour violoncelle et piano qui nous fait passer avec beaucoup d’évidence de la Sonate Arpeggione de Schubert au quatuor pour la fin du temps d’Olivier Messiaen en passant par Schumann et Webern. Même si les époques, les sources d’inspiration et les langages sont différents cet enregistrement montre la filiation entre ces quatre compositeurs, ce qui a priori n’est pas évident. Claudio Bohórquez au son clair et charnu forme avec Christoph Eschenbach (chambriste idéal) un duo aux multiples facettes malgré quelques petits et rares défauts (glissements de cordes, imprécisions ou manque d’unité sonore). Certains moments sont particulièrement émouvants comme le deuxième mouvement de l’Arpeggione sublimement rêveur ou les deux pièces d’Anton Webern écrites en 1899, au crépuscule du courant Romantique. Avec Schumann le duo Bohórquez/Eschenbach fait parfaitement ressortir la dualité psychologique du compositeur, méditatif et exalté. Le disque s’achève par l’unique mouvement pour violoncelle et piano du Quatuor pour la fin du temps qui, sorti de son contexte carcéral et lui donne une dimension plus intime et recueillie.
