 Zubin Mehta adore les barnums d’orchestre, d’un geste tranquille, l’œil comme las, il sait vous déclencher de ces tempêtes ! La Symphonia Domestica, et son grossissement de la famille à l’échelle cosmique, est écrite pour lui ; écoutez un peu comment il vous proclame le charivari final, s’y souviendrait-il de la folie qu’y déclenchait Herbert von Karajan à Berlin ? Mais ce brio bruyant, même s'il est irrésistible (on imagine l’effet au concert, on y est d’ailleurs !) ne doit pas masquer tout ce qui, au long de la partition, relève de l’anecdotique, du charmant, du tendre, de l’heureusement descriptif que Mehta cisèle avec gourmandise, faisant sourire ses londoniens. Et Schéhérazade ? Il en aura donné à Los Angeles comme à Tel Aviv des versions cinématographiques où le conte se trouvait un rien noyé dans les décors. A Londres, avec le violon fluté d’Henrik Hochschild, l’espace est plus ouvert, le récit plus varié, l’effet s’oublie pour le suspens, on suit le récit pas à pas, quitte à perdre en magnificence. Mais pour les deux épisodes des amants, c’est merveille que cet orchestre de parfums beau comme des miniatures, et lorsque le vaisseau de Kalender se brise sur le récif, quel tsunami de sons ! This is the first release on the LPO Label with conductor Zubin Mehta, whose working relationship with the LPO has spanned more than 30 years. The pieces were recorded live in concert, just a few years after his seminal recording with the Orchestra of Ravi Shankar’s Sitar Concerto No. 2, and the close relationship between conductor and Orchestra is apparent.Strauss’s Symphonia Domestica is scored for huge forces, and showcases the full scale of the Orchestra. Over five movements, it describes a day and night in the life of the Strauss family – mother, father and child. Written around the same time, for similar forces, it is a domestic counterpart to his Alpine Symphony (LPO-0106, released June 2018).Zubin Mehta returns to conduct the Orchestra once again on 18 November 2020 at Royal Festival Hall, in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 and Shankar’s Sitar Concerto No. 2.This is the first Rimsky-Korsakov release on the label. His unparalleled use of musical colour brings out every shade of the Orchestra, in a thrilling performance under Zubin Mehta.
