La conception de ce disque est basée sur un concert historique de Richard Strauss à Lugano en 1947 (Strauss a 83 ans) avec l'orchestre de la Suisse italienne. La seconde partie du programme en est l'enregistrement. A l'origine la sérénade op.7 précédait quatre lieder (avec la soprano Annette Brun) et la suite d'orchestre Der Bürger als Edelmann (Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme). Le disque reprend cette dernière œuvre mais remplace l'op. 7 par le concertino pour clarinette et basson datant de la même période (1947). Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme est une suite orchestrale de Richard Strauss tirée de la pièce de Molière elle- même révisée par son librettiste Hugo von Hoffmannstahl. L'œuvre en neuf mouvements composée en 1917 était prévue pour introduire l'opéra Ariane à Naxos mais Strauss en fit ultérieurement une pièce à part en y ajoutant quelques numéros. Effectif chambriste pour quelques danses lullystes réarrangées de façon brillante, d'un esprit suave et empreint d'une fausse désinvolture. Le concertino est d'une tonalité tout autre, fortement mélancolique. Strauss y déploie ses derniers feux dans le dialogue amoureux des deux instruments solistes. Un soleil couchant, un crépuscule mais nullement un déclin. Une profonde nostalgie infuse ces trois mouvements qui se succèdent sans répit. Markus Poschner à la tête de l'orchestre de la Suisse italienne (le même) restitue cette atmosphère en demi-teintes avec pudeur et maitrise. Précédé d'une touchante interview radiophonique du maître avant le concert, le témoignage du concert lui-même est incontournable. Baguette dressée, Richard Strauss regarde ses musiciens avec une bonhommie mêlée d'indifférence, laissant la soprano et sa propre musique exprimer cette poésie du silence et des adieux. Markus Poschner has skyrocketed to the top, with the German Conducting Prize in 2004 in particular furthering his career. Ever since then he has also regularly performed as a guest with orchestras of the greatest national and international renown. In the 2017/18 season he will succeed Dennis Russell Davies as the opera director at the Linz State Theater and principal conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra of Linz. Poschner became the principal conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana (OSI in Lugano) at the beginning of the current season and now is dedicating his premiere with this orchestra on the present CD to two compositions by Richard Strauss directly related to Lugano. Along with the Suite op. 60 with the incidental music to Der Bürger als Edelmann of 1917, Poschner conducts the Duet Concertino for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Strings penned by Strauss much later, in 1947, for the Lugano Orchestra and also premiered by him there. The attractive historic(al) bonus tracks include selections (Four Songs for Soprano and Orchestra by Strauss) from precisely this concert conducted by the composer on 11 June 1947 (his birthday!) as well as the concert address delivered by Bernhard Paumgartner on the same occasion.
