Stephan Beat Baumgartner was born in Zürich as the third of six children. At the age of six he got his first violin lessons. Very soon he began to compose. Also the woodwind instruments fascinated him. Whenever there was an opportunity to get an instrument into his hands, he was able in a short time to play and improvise on it. When he was 16 years old, he listened for the first time to a solo bassoon. It was the bassoon-concerto by W.A. Mozart (KV. 191). Immediately he changed his life plan to study medicine and decided to be a bassoon player.His family could not understand and accept this profound change. So he left his father’s house to be independent. ”At my concerts I am often asked to speak about my music: That is a real problem for me, first I am a composer not a writer. From a good composition as well as from every artwork, I expect it to be created so perfectly, that there is no need of explanation. A painter who has to verbalise his pictures, is not able of the particular and wonderful language of painting. Nobody asks a poet to explain his lyrics on a musical instrument! Why are musicians and painters forced to do so? . But this is a global illness of our time! You are going to hear my music, please close your eyes and open your heart. Not my thoughts and whatever went through my mind during the creative process is important, what is moving in your soul is essential. If there is an echo, my aim is fulfilled. Music has to be conceived by the heart and not intellectually. Therefore I do not intend music to have to do with intellect. But if you analyse art only by brain, the harvest is poor, unknown and uncountles spheres will be hidden. I am very thankful for the opportunity to arouse and participate in the intense richness of the European culture. I am convinced, that the extended tonality never will be exhausted.
