 Pierre Pichler (1983-) a été formé à la meilleure école des clarinettistes du Wiener Philharmoniker : Alfred Prinz, Peter Schmidl, Ernst Ottensaimer. Mais il a également étudié la direction d’orchestre auprès d’Uros Lajovic qui lui transmit l’enseignement du grand pédagogue Hans Swarowsky, ainsi qu’auprès de Jorma Panula, qui forma Salonen, Saraste, Oramo, Vänskä ou Mälkki. Un lignage de haut vol qui, après plusieurs postes de première clarinette soliste : Kuala Lumpur, Dresde, Francfort, Bloomington, en fit l’assistant de Philippe Jordan, avant qu’il ne dirige lui-même à Prague le concert d’ouverture des festivités du bicentenaire de la mort de Mozart, et prenne la tête de l’ensemble Musica Juvenum Wien afin d’amener les enfants et adolescents à une écoute joyeuse de la musique classique. Dans un programme soigneusement conçu faisant alterner ici des œuvres phares du répertoire : les Fantasiestücke Schumann, le Grand Duo concertant Weber, la seconde Sonate pour piano et clarinette Brahms, et d’autres moins répandues : les Quatre pièces op. 5 d'Alban Berg et les Cinq pièces d'Alfred Prinz (1991), on appréciera sans réserve la clarinette viennoise au son charnu de Pierre Pichler. D’autant que l’artiste ne cherche pas à faire étalage d’une virtuosité clinquante. Tout à l’inverse, il la domine et grâce à une sonorité presque symphonique, restitue à ces œuvres une indéniable dimension poétique, dont on sait que, par-delà l’agilité et les grandes lignes du souffle cantabile, sont toujours porteuses les compositions pour clarinette. Le jeu subtil du pianiste Albert Frantz, dont un enregistrement d’Alkan (Gramola 98961) avait été remarqué en 2010, ajoute à cet enregistrement de qualité qui complète le panorama des œuvres chambristes pour clarinette dont l’univers discographique est actuellement prolixe. (Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand) The Austrian clarinetist Pierre Pichler, who has also made a name for himself as a conductor of numerous orchestras, combines works for clarinet and piano from the “Golden Age” of the clarinet (which one might declare starting with Mozart’s works for this instrument) to the 20th century together with the pianist Albert Frantz on his album “SONUS”. Robert Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces, Op. 73 is probably one of the best-known clarinet works of the Romantic period, but Carl Maria von Weber also created numerous “classics” for the clarinet, including the Grand Duo concertant for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 48. The Austrian clarinetist Alfred Prinz (1930–2014), with whom Pierre Pichler was still in personal contact, was a member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for over half a century, and was also active as a composer of numerous works, like orchestral works, chamber music and songs. His Five Pieces, Op. 93, are partly dance-like, partly capricious, partly elegantly ingratiating, they depict small character images in an immediately understandable, tonal musical language, which reconcile the joy of playing with the joy of listening. This was not the primary goal of Alban Berg in his Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano op. 5 from 1913, which, although the conventional major-minor system has already been overridden here, can also be described as character pieces. The album finds its ending with the Sonata No. 2 for Piano and Clarinet, Op. 120/2 by Johannes Brahms, who only devoted himself to this instrument towards the end of his creative period.
