C’est à la toute fin de sa vie et particulièrement dans le courant de l’année 1828 que Schubert a composé ses plus grands chefs-d’œuvre. Sa musique pour piano est particulièrement révélatrice de son style qui reflète une personnalité à la fois tendre, rêveuse et mélancolique. Ingrid Marsoner nous propose dans cet enregistrement un florilège de neuf pièces, ne posant aucune difficulté technique à la pianiste chevronnée qu’elle est. Cependant son interprétation est plus problématique car la musique pour piano de Schubert est extrêmement complexe dans son expression. Elle exige délicatesse et imagination, tout en excluant la mièvrerie. La pianiste ne semble pas très à l’aise dans cet univers où son jeu appliqué rend le discours parfois terne et inexpressif. En outre, le choix d’œuvres semblables ne facilite pas la variété ni l’épanouissement musical, que ce soit dans les pièces les plus démonstratives (troisième Klavierstück ou deuxième Impromptu) ou à contrario, dans les œuvres plus recueillies et poignantes (Impromptu en sol bémol, second couplet du deuxième Klavierstück). Par ailleurs, ces œuvres ont été enregistrées par tant de musiciens exceptionnels que la comparaison ne peut-être que préjudiciable à cette honnête et méritante pianiste. (Jean-Noël Regnier)

Ingrid Marsoner dedicates her latest recording to Franz Schubert’s late piano works and contrasts the “Four Impromptus D 899” with the more intimate and much less frequently performed “Three Piano Pieces D 946”. The Impromptus D 899 were composed in 1827, around a year before Schubert’s death and close in time to the “Winterreise” D 911. The composer was in a particularly gloomy mood at the time and it was certainly no coincidence that he chose such distant keys as G-flat major for the third piece, in keeping with the eerily moving beauty of these works. The “Three Piano Pieces, D 946” were composed in 1828, the year of Franz Schubert’s death. They were not published during his lifetime and were only discovered and published by Johannes Brahms. At the end of his life, Franz Schubert studied counterpoint intensively and even attended a lesson with Simon Sechter, Vienna’s first music theory teacher. In the middle section of the first piano piece in particular, one can discover a surprising polyphony for the composer. The CD concludes with the Allegretto in C minor D 915, also composed shortly before his death at the age of 31.
