L'homme est un animal fier qui zébre de tranchants skis de fond, fusil à lunette en bandoulière, un crissant paysage en vieux noir et blanc (neige et mélèzes) pour en bouter aux confins tout présomptueux envahisseur tendance brune ou rouge. Quand il est né en 1935 et qu'un ogre russo-soviétique a englouti sa Carélie natale, il se console en écrivant une musique subtile, élégante et sincère, et répond alors au nom finnois d'Aulis Sallinen. Ce francophile déclaré, avec aujourd'hui une centaine d'opus, a beaucoup donné dans la symphonie et l'opéra. Il a avoué s'être débarrassé assez tôt du ''carcan'' du sérialisme, s'est interrogé sur la notion actuelle d'avant-garde, a privilégié une ouverture au monde sans barrières, et finit par opter pour la musique de chambre (une demi-dizaine de brefs quatuors à cordes... et des clins d'œil au tango révisé finlandais !). Parce que son pays regorge de formidables formations pour ça (mais déjà, nous avions repéré ce grand pianiste, Gothoni...). ''Avec l'âge, ajoutait-il, on n'écrit pas beaucoup de musique et on est plus attentif à la qualité". Ce digne descendant de Sibelius, après avoir flirté avec les mélodies traditionnelles de son identité nationale, adopta donc un style délié, clair et diatonique, évoquant souvent les froides étendues des paysages finlandais. Plus tonal qu'étroitement néo-romantique, moins minimaliste que répétitif (mais sans abuser). Dans l'unité d'une voix qui prouve qu'il en a une bien à lui, cet enregistrement nous le prouve. Ces formules thématiques simples, ce transparent glacier de la construction formelle sont d'abord ici au service du violoncelle (Sallinen lui consacré aussi un concerto). Trio et sonate nous sont restitués par leurs interprètes créateurs. Ce trio argumente auriculairement la confrontation par un peintre des couleurs fondamentales du jaune et du bleu, syndrôme synesthésique que connut pareillement un Messiaen, le dernier Scriabine ou ce grand mystique d'Oboukov. Following the conclusion of our edition featuring Aulis Sallinen’s principal symphonic works and involving the composer’s participation in the program selection process and his cooperation as an artistic consultant, we would now like to present more chamber music by him. When we examine the instrumental statistics for Aulis Sallinen’s overall oeuvre, we see that in quantitative terms he has preferred the violoncello above all other solo instruments, and a constant that uniformly pervades his chamber compositions is his love of the cello sound. He composed the Sonata per violoncello e piano as a commissioned work for the Naantali Music Festival. Its dedicatees Arto Noras and Ralf Gothóni premiered it in 2005. It is a compact work with elements transcending movement limits indicating that the composer views it as a single complex. From a Swan Song is an extended work of almost fifteen minutes in duration and develops – in keeping with the idea functioning as its point of departure – in the manner of a scene in which the two instrumentalists are actors who perform a dramatic dialogue. In the introduction to his only piano trio Sallinen reveals hardly more than he does in the score of his Swan Song. He merely writes : "The sensory world of a painter gradually losing his eyesight is damned in the end to function merely by memory. Thanks to memory, he knows how yellow and blue sound together, but he hears it while no longer seeing it. When I wrote this composition as a commissioned work for the Finnish Naantali Music Festival held in the summer of 2010, I was thinking all along of the three outstanding Finnish musicians who would perform the piece: Ralf Gothóni (piano), Elina Vähälä (violin), and Arto Noras (violoncello)".
