Serge Prokofiev est l’un des compositeurs qui est le mieux parvenu à insuffler le caractère sombre et passionné du drame de Shakespeare Roméo et Juliette. Depuis la création du ballet en 1940, les plus grands chorégraphes ont contribué à sa notoriété. En 1965, Kenneth Mac Millan en a proposé une lecture fidèle à la tradition littéraire pour le compte du Royal Ballet de Londres. C’est précisément cette version qui a été retenue par Michael Nunn et William Trevitt, deux anciens danseurs de la compagnie. Pour les besoins d’une adaptation cinématographique, ces derniers ont réduit la durée du ballet d’une trentaine de minutes afin d’en resserrer l’action et souligner sa dimension tragique. Les réalisateurs n’ont pas situé l’action dans la ville médiévale de Vérone mais préféré en reconstituer les décors en studios. Ces choix artistiques donnent au récit un cachet particulier ; les mouvements de caméras capturent des nuances dans l’expression des visages et des corps et apportent du réalisme aux danses et scènes d’épée. Les costumes de Nicolas Georgiadis sont étincelants de beauté. En dépit d’une chorégraphie qui manque parfois d’imagination, ce spectacle, servi par un quatuor d’excellents interprètes a le mérite d’ouvrir l’art de la danse à un public plus large.
