 Polonais d’origine juive, le compositeur Roman Ryterband est né à Lodz en 1914. Après des études de droit et de musique auprès de Glazounov, il s’expatrie en Suisse, achève un doctorat de musicologie à Berne puis s’établit avec sa famille à Montréal où il enseigne. Il décède à Palm Springs en Californie à l’âge de 65 ans. S’il compose un peu dans tous les genres, l’essentiel de son legs est consacré à la musique de chambre. Cet album signé d’un quatuor de solistes polonais nous en propose opportunément un aperçu. Ryterland était-il un romantique nostalgique ? On trouve un peu partout dans ses œuvres pour piano des réminiscences de Chopin et de Rachmaninov (Les Nocturnes et Préludes). Le violon de la Sonate et des "Trois Ballades Hébraïques" laisse percevoir quelques échos de la Légende de Wieniawski. La plupart des pièces sont composées pendant la guerre et la mélancolie prédomine. Un des Préludes est d’ailleurs dédié à son frère Stanislaw, victime de l’holocauste. D’un lyrisme intense et tourmenté, le "Tryptique contemporain" pour violoncelle et piano exorcise lui aussi ces années noires. Enfin la guillerette Sonatina pour guitare (1979) et le bref Concerto pour piano et harpe en un seul mouvement (1948) qui évoque Corina Blaser harpiste et amie de compositeur, constituent de brèves éclaircies dans ce programme plutôt sombre. De la très belle musique défendue ici avec évidence. (Jérôme Angouillant) This album is an invitation to a journey, both musical and metaphysical. The music of Roman Ryterband (1914–1979), who himself was a wanderer in the harsh times of WWII and in post-war years, was inspired by the surrounding world and its reflection in the artist’s soul. Among the musical themes, one can hear the composer’s fascination with the music of the world, which resulted not only from his open and sensitive nature, but also from his in-depth ethnomusicological studies and numerous travels. Ryterband paid tribute to his Jewish roots in the composition Trois ballades hebraïques, while Three Nocturnes for piano, written during the war, were dedicated to the memory of his brother, murdered in the Holocaust. He also returned to the subject of Shoah in the Triptique contemporain for cello and piano composed a few years later yet still during the ongoing war. The composition Three Preludes for piano and the Song of the Plains of Poland for violin and piano, documenting the deep bond between the composer and his native country, also come from that period. In turn, the Concerto for piano, string orchestra and harp was written on commission after the war. The latest piece on the album is the Sonatina for guitar, which was created a year before the composer’s death and whose first performance the composer did not have the opportunity to hear anymore. The music presented on the album is a testimony to the life of a sensitive man, wronged by fate, but at the same time open and interested in the world, still able to admire the surrounding reality like a child. Anna Kijanowska played the piano, Ania Filochowska – the violin, Ari Evan – the cello and Paul Cesarczyk – the guitar. The recording also features artists of the Silesian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Malgorzata Kaniowska.
