 C’est la classique d’histoire d’amour entre Betsy, jeune (future) américaine, patriote exaltée (Annalene Beechey, timbre juvénilissime) et Sir John, officier anglais (James Cleverton, émission franche et graves veloutés : here in my arms it’s adorable, à fondre) sur fond de Guerre d’Indépendance. Après quelques péripéties, happy end obligé, sous l’égide de George Washington himself. Kim Criswell, pilier de Broadway, compose une Mrs Murray rusée mais bienveillante. Impayable, son duo avec Tryon (Philip O’Reilly), et bien typique des sous-entendus érotiques qui innervent le livret (et la partition). On avoue s’être attaché à ce petit monde de jeunes femmes espiègles et de soldats débonnaires plus motivés par leurs amours que par la guerre, menés tambour battant par David Brophy à la tête d’un Orchestra of Ireland à l’effectif allégé. De ce premier succès du trio Rodgers-Hart-Fields, le matériel original est perdu. La reconstitution est signée Larry Moore qui s’en explique de façon détaillée et passionnante dans le livret. Coup de cœur pour la délicieuse gavotte et le chœur d’ouverture du II : laissez-vous bercer… (Olivier Gutierrez) The composer perhaps most influenced by Victor Herbert and Jerome Kern was Richard Rodgers (1902–1979), who acknowledged his affection for Kern's shows with Bolton and Wodehouse. His score for Dearest Enemy, his first Broadway success, is clearly influenced by Kern's graceful way with a good melody. Dearest Enemy, written with lyricist Lorenz Hart (1895–1943) and book writer Herbert Fields (1897–1958) opened on September 18, 1925. It displays the young composer's synthesis of Victor Herbert, Rudolf Friml, Sigmund Romberg and other writers of the day. Rodgers' work with Lorenz Hart covered a wide range, from the sophisticated innocence of Babes in Arms (1937) to adaptations of Mark Twain, Shakespeare and the sleazy showbiz world of John O'Hara's Pal Joey (1940). Dearest Enemy is a romantic score by the composer who would write Carousel twenty years later and shows how the third generation of composers for Broadway helped to make the transition from operetta to musical theater.
