With his second album Rough Songs the South German trumpeter Robert Giegling expands his quintet sound influenced by hard bop and new hip-hop aesthetics. Robert Giegling: "On my second album I wanted to give each song a different face. In HipHop the density and directness, the sonic openness have inspired me. At the same time I still wanted to write music that seeks the living, spontaneous, communicative elements in jazz. Often the starting point for each piece was a certain feeling. In Defiance I thought, for example, of an old man who is quite powerless and disillusioned. But under the surface seethes a force that helps him defiantly rebel against his fate. "
