 Hollandais d'origine puis naturalisé américain, Richard Hageman (1881-1966) étudie la musique au conservatoire de Bruxelles puis à Amsterdam où il débute sa carrière de pianiste accompagnateur. Il suit ainsi la chanteuse Yvette Guilbert à New York, ville où il s'installe définitivement. Il occupe ensuite les postes de chef d'orchestre et de directeur musical dans différentes villes américaines (Chicago, Philadelphie, Los Angeles) avant d'être sollicité par Hollywood pour diriger le Hollywood Bowl et composer de nombreuses musiques de films dont celle de "La chevauchée Fantastique" (John Ford, 1939) qui lui vaudra un Oscar. Outre sa production hollywoodienne, il est l'auteur d'un corpus de songs pour voix et piano. Cet album signé de la chanteuse Siobhan Stagg et du pianiste Nico de Villiers en offre une compilation assez variée sur des textes de langue anglaise, française (Trois chansons Françaises) et allemande (Ver Deutche Gedischte). Parmi celles-ci, "Not to Go my Love" fut reprise notamment par Kiri te Kanawa et Thomas Hampson. L'ensemble évoque plutôt Tchaikovski et la mélodie française qu'une quelconque inspiration germanique. L'inventivité mélodique est constante et la partie de piano particulièrement soignée. Si l'accompagnement du pianiste Nico de Villiers est irréprochable d'effervescence et de soutien, on peut relever une certaine égalité de timbre (...de velours) et d'expression de la part de la chanteuse australienne Siobhan Stagg, qui par ailleurs n'est pas sans rappeler la grande Elly Ameling. (Jérôme Angouillant) Born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, on July 9, 1881, Hageman studied, as a protégé of Queen Regent Emma, at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels from 1893-1895 and thereafter at the Amsterdamsch Conservatorium. Hageman conducted the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam from 1898 until he moved to Paris in 1903. There he met Yvette Guilbert, the popular diseuse, whom Henri Toulouse-Lautrec immortalized in several paintings. After accompanying Guilbert on two US concert tours, Hageman moved to New York in 1908, to start a 13-year association with the Metropolitan Opera as coach and conductor. After returning to Europe in 1930, he completed and promoted his only opera, Caponsacchi (1931) in Germany and Austria. In 1937, Caponsacchi was staged, for the last time, at the Metropolitan Opera. Hageman moved to Hollywood in 1938, quickly establishing himself as an A-list composer. He scored films for directors such as John Ford and Frank Lloyd. Six of his film scores were nominated for an Academy Award, later known as an Oscar, winning with John Ford’s western, Stagecoach (1939). He conducted performances at the Hollywood Bowl and starred in several films, including The Great Caruso (1951) with Mario Lanza and Rhapsody (1954) with Elizabeth Taylor.
