The internationally renowned drummer and percussionist Reto Weber is back and better than ever with his new four-piece band "Squeezeband". He has surrounded himself with the outstanding talent of Nino G, beatboxer, and Roman Nowka, one of the most exciting young guitarists around. The final member of the quarter is the respected double bassist Samuel Kuehni. Their new CD "Squeeze Me" is bursting with vitality and seamlessly blends the different musical styles of each member. Reto Weber is not only responsible for composition but also provides the melodies linking each track through the hang (his own invention), the steel pan, the Indian ghatam and different types of hand drums. "Squeeze Me" drifts back and forth between jazz and hip hop, creating a unique and enthralling sound. In recent years, Nino G has come to the public's attention thanks to his solo concerts, for example during Expo 02, the Swiss National Exhibition in 2002. Admiration for his work extends beyond hip hop aficionados. The 32-year-old grew up in Orvin, Switzerland. A massive fan of the Fat Boys since 1984, he decided to teach himself beat box techniques. Today, he is one of the most important figures in the beat box scene, as witnessed by his numerous appearances at the main beat box events in London, Berlin and New York. His collaboration with Reto Weber has taken him in an entirely different direction. His current musical/educational tour of Swiss schools alongside Reto Weber has been a phenomenal success. The 23-year-old guitarist from Bienne, Roman Nowka, has made a name for himself in several independent projects. His work has also been honoured by the Lucerne School of Music. Nowka is particularly interested in the music of Thelonious Monk. His CD on the Altrisuoni label is brimming with musicality. Nowka is undoubtedly one to watch out for in the Swiss jazz scene. Samuel Kuehni has earned a reputation as an excellent double bass player thanks to his involvement in several Swiss jazz bands, playing the entire spectrum of jazz styles from dixieland to modern jazz. For the first time in his career, with "Squeezeband", Kuehni has decided to explore uncharted territory, which have opened up exciting new musical perspectives for him. Ueli Moser, July 2004
