 On aura vu paraître en un an, deux enregistrements distincts de ces œuvres : celui Musica ad Rhenum dirigé par J. Wentz et inclus dans un coffret de 4 CDs d’œuvres de différents compositeurs néerlandais ou ayant séjourné aux Pays Bas durant « l’ère baroque » , dont j’ai rendu compte dans ces colonnes (Brilliant Classics). Et le présent album, consacré à ces seuls concertos, interprétés par l’ensemble — batave, lui aussi — Sfera Armoniosa, conduit par M. Fentross. Le compositeur, qui fut d’abord organiste, perfectionna en Italie sa pratique du violon auprès de Tartini, et fit la plus grande partie de sa carrière en Angleterre où il mourut. Ses concertos grosso sont conçus selon le modèle corellien revu à travers le prisme haendelien (le 1er mouvement est une ouverture ou un largo, les 2es et 4es sont rapides. Hellendaal en ajoute un court cinquième, qui fait souvent référence à l’univers de la danse : menuet, bourrée…). Bien construites, coulées dans un moule parfaitement identifiable, agréables, ces pièces n’offrent pas vraiment de surprises ou d’inventions marquantes. L’enregistrement paru chez Brilliant se révèle largement supérieur à celui qui vient de paraître : on y sent une pulsion, une animation, une élégance, des rebondissements qui font défaut dans l’interprétation de la Sfera Armoniosa qui s’avère empesée dans les mouvements lents (c’est le cas notamment des traînantes et presque ennuyeuses ouvertures des concertos 1 et 2). Il y a une espèce d’afféterie, une façon d’insister et d’appuyer dans l’affettuoso des concertos 2 et 4, alors que ces mouvements sont rendus de façon légère, subtile, délicate dans la version Wentz. Laquelle, dans les mouvements rapides, rend les contrastes entre instruments avec une grâce une malice, un délié et une poésie qui font défaut chez la Sferia Armoniosa, trop terne, au fond. Le prix attractif de la version Brilliant, et le précieux supplément qu’offrent ses 3 autres cds font le reste... (Bertrand Abraham) Eighteenth-century London musical life was strongly oriented towards Italian music, with Arcangelo Corelli as the prime example. Corelli never visited England, but his music was heard everywhere, at home and on the concert stage. Handel and Geminiani, who composed in a style based on Corelli’s work, took full advantage of this ‘Corellimania’. No wonder, then, that also foreign composers living in England were inspired by the work of the big three and continued their formula for success. Among these continuators (which sounds better than followers) Pieter Hellendaal must be counted. Hellendaal was born in 1721 in Rotterdam as the son of a candle maker. Around 1740 he was in Padua for a while to be trained as a violinist and composer with Giuseppe Tartini, Europe’s most famous violin teacher. Hellendaal then settled in Amsterdam, nevertheless chose to leave for London in 1751, presumably with the hope of greater fame and income. The London period lasted from 1751 to 1760. His Six Grand Concertos were issued in 1758 by the London music publisher John Walsh. Later, in Cambridge, Hellendaal was appointed organist of Pembroke Hall Chapel in 1762 and he would spend the rest of his life, a time span of almost forty years, in the city. He died in 1799, aged 78. The Six Grand Concertos of 1758 are his only known works for orchestra. The characteristic of such a ‘grand concerto’ – a translation of the Italian concerto grosso – is the distinction between solo and tutti parts. In Hellendaal’s Grand Concertos there are four soloists, two violinists, an alto player, and a cellist, who together form the concertino. Hellendaal certainly took the work of his three illustrious predecessors Corelli, Handel and Geminiani as a starting point, but he added a completely individual interpretation to it. The result is a set of six masterpieces.
