WALKING ALONG THE RIVER Piano, double bass and drums is a jazz formula, which has recently acquired new momentum. This young trio's repertoire is open to pop and other influences. Tones of chamber music underlie or are superimposed on the pure jazz beat. The pianist Oliver Tabeling, who has lived in New York for many years, formed his trio in 2001 and caused quite a sensation with his first CD, "slightly different". He is a brilliant technician with a highly creative imagination. Michael Chylewski on double bass and David Meier on drums masterfully provide added energy to his fluid artistry and lyrical reduction. The music does not shy away from harmony yet lives permanently on the edge of eruption, prepared sound and adventurous dislocation. The ease with which this group also improvises on popular melodies, transforming them without clinging to any particular one, makes them one of Europe's most interesting jazz piano trios.
