Il y bien une musique d'orgue conçue pour la synagogue. Ce disque en fait la démonstration à travers des compositeurs juifs nés avant 1900 et dont les noms nous sont aujourd'hui parfaitement inconnus. L'organiste Stephan Lutermann a choisi par ailleurs un des orgues de la cathédrale St Maria & Cécilia à Verden. Instrument d'une majestueuse sobriété qui n'est pas celui qui orne la pochette du CD situé lui dans une synagogue en Roumanie. L'apparition de la musique d'orgue dans la communauté juive passe par des compositeurs qui souvent officient en tant qu'organiste ou directeur de chœur dans les synagogues, c'est le cas de David Nowakowsky (1848-1921), d'Ernest August Beyer (1868-1943) et plus tard d’Heinrich Schalit (1886-1976). La majorité des œuvres fait directement référence à certains passages de la Torah et au fameux Kol Nidre (Beyer, Passacaille et fugue) de Siegfried Wuzburger (1877-1942). Certaines pièces sont d'ailleurs précédées de mélodies folkloriques juives chantées par le chantre Assaf Levitin. De ces quelques musiciens qui composent dans un style musical romantique et symphonique et un contrepoint traditionnel hérité de Reger (Des préludes et des fugues), Heinrich Schalit et Arno Nadel (1878-1943) se détachent par l'utilisation de la polyrythmie et du diatonisme qui évoque par moments l'univers d'un Messiaen. Une publication utile permettant de découvrir un répertoire rare et digne d’intérêt. (Jérôme Angouillant)

Throughout the centuries, from its first pictorial representation in a Bohemian devotional book in 1494 until the present day, the synagogue organ has been regarded as an unusual phenomenon. Although the use of keyboard instruments for the accompaniment of the Jewish liturgy in Europe can be traced back to the beginnings of the Early Modern period, a more distinctive solo repertoire for them did not come about until they more frequently began to appear in synagogues during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in conjunction with contemporary religious, cultural, and musical developments within the Jewish Diaspora in Central Europe. The works selected for this CD reflect the history of this organ repertoire from Central Europe, parts of Eastern Europe, and the United States, where many composers sought refuge in order to escape persecution from the National Socialists. On our recording the works are presented in chronological order and offer insights into the most important stylistic developments in this organ repertoire. Stephan Lutermann interprets these works by composers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on the organ in the Verden Cathedral. Assaf Levitin, who was trained as an opera singer and currently serves as the cantor of the Liberal Jewish Community in Hanover, interprets the Jewish songs belonging to the particular organ works.
