musique brute, the name of the group, refers to Art Brut, that "raw, primitive" art, which already fascinated the painter Jean Dubuffet middle of the last century. It is art of amatuers, of outsiders, of the self-taught, who in spite of, and independent of the academies, have found creative artistic expression. This comparison is only partly accurate and an analogy is certainly not intended. The musicians of musique brute possess excellent knowledge of the most varied fields and traditions of compositional and improvisational creation. But they want - and here the reference to Art Brut - that their music notbe assigned to any school, that they remain free of all rules or forms for established or traditional fashions.Working together since 2006, the members of musique brute have developed a unique way of ensemble playing, eliminating any difference between solo and accompanying functions. Intuitively, forms were discovered which became important in the developmental process. In spite of so much common ground there remains always the need for individual musical expression, to challenge and further advance the collective search-and-discovery process. Writing about their own music, the participants of musique brute speak of the "necessity to take on new challenges" and the "urgency of free improvisation". It is this urge which drives, and has always driven, the music forward - this rejection of the familiar and the arbitrary, so that there must always be a new beginning.
