Schikaneder chez Sherlock Holmes! A Glyndebourne cette translation brillante, assez irrésistible de théâtre comme d’esprit est chez elle, et j’admire la fantaisie de haute volée que l’univers de Barbe & Doucet transfuse dans la musique de Mozart : c’est cousu main à la partition qu’enlève une distribution de jeunesse absolument irrésistible. Ardent le Tamino de David Portillo a quelque chose de l’élan qu’y mettait Schreier, abyssal et dangereux le Sarastro de Brindley Sherratt est un modèle d’éloquence face à la Reine de la Nuit intrigante, venimeuse de Caroline Wettergreen aux aigus stratosphériques. Irrésistible le Papageno fruité, insolent et bouleversant à la fois de Björn Bürger rappelle le naturel charmant d’un Prey, c’est assez dire et quelle Papagena il a avec Sofia Fomina, vraie soprano Mozart pas du tout tête d’épingle. Au milieu d’une distribution aussi brillante que complètent des Dames délurées et des Knaben charmants, une merveille : la Papagena de Brindley Sherratt. On orne beaucoup le chant (mais toujours à propos, et même les Dames à leur trio d’entrée), l’orchestre déploie ses timbres d’instruments d’époque, tempos et accents sont historiquement informés et surtout fluides, magiques, accordés à ce spectacle parfait, qui préfère regarder du coté de la fantaisie plutôt que de la symbolique, et c’est tant mieux ! One of Mozart’s most enchanting works, Die Zauberflöte is a fairy tale that uses familiar archetypes to ask provocative and difficult questions about religion, the nature of power, the bonds of family, and of course love. Premiered just months before Mozart’s death, Die Zauberflöte in many ways represents a new departure for the composer. Catching the spirit of revolution in the air, Mozart turned his attention for the first time from court opera to popular opera, writing this singspiel (‘sungplay’) for a new and much broader audience. Celebrated Canadian directing duo Barbe & Doucet make both their British and Glyndebourne debuts here with their new Die Zauberflöte, a veritable “theatrical feast of eccentricity.” (The Guardian).
